My dad was planning on transferring some Word documents and photos to an external hard drive before factory resetting the computer completely and restoring the files from the external. u/mcribgaming recommended a Windows reset install that would delete programs but not his personal data. The GPS was Magellan brand so you can avoid your elderly family members potentially falling for the same scamĮdit: The last question I have before I can mark this thread solved is how best to retain my dad's files and which files would be safe to keep. Tl dr my dad got duped by a hacker into installing a remote access program and I don't know what to do besides uninstalling it and changing some passwords I would normally tell them to hire an IT guy for this but the current pandemic makes that hard. I suspect that I'll have to change the wifi login info again since my family changed it last night without changing the router info first. I'm extremely out of my element here and I'm not sure what to do.
Is it possible that the hacker is still connected to the network in an unseen way? Despite showing up in the notifications tab on the Xfi app, I can't find any device by that name in the list of devices on Xfinity's site or when checking on 10.0.0.1.
I wasn't around when it happened last night but my mom and sister changed the wifi password from my sister's phone, which was connected to mobile data and not wifi, and approximately 20 minutes later the Xfinity app noticed a device named HonHaiPr-5B89 signed in and I'm not sure what it is or where it's coming from. He has since uninstalled Ultraviewer, run a couple virus scans, and is in the process of restoring his computer to an earlier date but I still suspect something is amiss. He called the phone number on the scammer's site and was tricked into downloading a remote access program called Ultraviewer and only started to suspect it was illegitimate when the scammer told him to deactivate his firewalls.
So my dad bought an old GPS for my grandma who can't use smartphones and tried updating the firmware on it but when he googled the company, he was unfortunately misled by a site mimicking the authentic site.
